LITTLE JESTER:
By Linda Corby

“I've never compromised myself and I'll be damned if I start doing it now!” Shirley said as she inhaled deeply on the cigarette while smoke curled about her head and she looked around at the others in the tack-room.
“You're fired and we’re through you bastard." Shirley blasted at Joe, eyeing him with a glazed coldness in her eyes that went right through him, and he could not help visibly shivering as they all stared at him. “You to Mel, little cow, you can both pack your gear and get out of my yard immediately. Don’t even think of ever coming back or I swear I will swing for the pair of you! “ Shirley watched them as they darted out of the tack room brushing against her as they made their escape through the doorway, heading straight for the staff quarters across the yard a knowing glance went between them as they did so, they both knew what they had done was wrong but the glance said ‘So what if we did?’
Shirley looked around the tack-room at the shocked expressions on the faces of the others. “You are reporting them to the Police aren’t you?” David asked, as his silky strand of his auburn hair fell across his face, making him appear much younger than his real age of twenty-four, and made Shirley feel strange warmth towards this slight of frame, mild natured jockey, who normally never had a bad word to say about anyone, and she thought how innocent of him to think that there was any way she couldn’t after what they had done as she replied. “Yes David, of course I am, there really isn’t any alternative!”
The Police arrived as Joe and Mel were about to drive out of the yard, it was pure luck that none of the owners were present to see them arrested. Shirley’s horse Jester Boy had been collected by the knackers yard earlier that morning, but it would be a few days later that they got the results of his autopsy, the results were much as expected, Jester Boy had died due to an overdose of sedatives, if it hadn’t been for David catching Joe putting something into his feed bucket goodness knows what would have happened.
Shirley knew in her heart that she would never get over losing Jester Boy; she would always remember his flaxen main, shining chestnut coat and beautiful nature. Some horses just had that bit of something special about them, and he had been Shirley’s favourite because he was in her heart that something special.
David stood beside Shirley as they watched the chestnut foal prancing around his mother in the small orchard next to the house smiling. “What you going to call him?” David asked. “Jester Girl, she has that something special about her like her dad!” They smiled at each other knowing that a new dawn was beginning!
